Voice phishing, also known as “vishing,” is a type of fraud that occurs when someone uses the telephone to try to trick you into giving them personal or financial information.
Phishers may pretend to be calling from a legitimate company or organization, such as your bank or credit card company. They may say there is a problem with your account and ask you to confirm your account number, Social Security number, or other sensitive information. Or they may claim to be calling from a government agency and say that you need to provide personal information to qualify for a benefits program.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from your bank or another financial institution, do not give out any personal information. Hang up and call the institution directly to verify the caller’s identity.
Protect yourself against voice phishing scams by following these tips:
– Do not give out personal information such as your Social Security number, account numbers, or passwords over the phone.
– If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call the customer service number for the company the caller claimed to represent. Use a phone number you know to be legitimate, not one provided by the caller.
– Be suspicious of unexpected calls or those that come from blocked numbers. Scammers may use technology to disguise their caller ID information.
